Based just a few miles north of Cambridge, we provide specialist EMC testing and consultancy services for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Radio Approvals.
Expert advice and consultancy
To us, the testing process is about more than a simple pass or a fail. Our experienced and knowledgeable team are on hand throughout the testing process to provide assistance with problem solving and technical fixes. We will help you to understand, evaluate and interpret test results. This valuable feedback will help you to refine your design to achieve compliance in a timely and cost-effective manner. Our on-site facilities are available for clients to undertake remedial work to products, so that you might achieve compliance on the spot whenever possible.
Supporting you every step the way…
Before testing
Consultancy and advice to help you identify potential problem areas in advance, saving time and money to failures and retesting.During testing
Assistance with problem solving, technical fixes and remedial work, helping you achieve compliance on the spot where possible. After testing
Provision of detailed compliance reports. Ongoing advice and support on compliance procedures.A stitch in time…
Pre-compliance testing and consultancy early in the development cycle invariably proves to be highly cost-effective. Problem areas can be identified at a stage when fundamental design aspects are still being formulated, and so the cost of change is at its lowest and disruption to project timescales is minimised.Accreditations

Derek is the founder (1988) and Managing Director of dB Technology. His pragmatic approach to EMC along with sound engineering principles soon attracted a wide customer base and built the strong foundations of a successful business. Derek continues to be our principal consulting engineer, providing highly sought after EMC design advice to customers.

Peter Barlow BSc
Peter has worked within the business since 1998 and is a highly experienced engineer who also fulfils the role of Operations Manager. Stephen has been with dB Technology since 2005 and is an experienced engineer. Prior to joining the company he had many years’ experience of system test, ATE development and manufacturing test with emphasis on trunk communications equipment.

Dave Smith BSc MSc
Joining us back in 1995, Dave has worked his way to the position of Senior Engineer and oversees all elements of testing, calibration and reporting, holding responsibility for many of the technical issues within the laboratory. Dave also acts as a consulting engineer and his in depth knowledge of regulatory areas of EMC and Radio Approvals is highly regarded by our customers.
Russell McDonnell
Russell has over 10 years’ experience of EMC testing at dB Technology. He arrived at dB Technology having spent many years in hardware production and test. His previous role as a Production Manager has lent itself to his understanding of the production process and the implications of the modifications and fixes that customers may need to consider.
dB Technology was founded by Derek in 1988, prior to which he had worked as Principal Electronics Engineer at Philips Scientific (formerly Pye Unicam). It was within this role that Derek became responsible for the generation of design standards across the company, which included a focus on EMC. His expertise in this area led to requests for him to present lectures at IEE events on the subject of ‘Designing for EMC’.
Derek’s extensive experience of electronic design combined with his technical knowledge of EMC meant he was well placed to start a business offering both specialist EMC test facilities and practical engineering advice on fixing EMC problems. These principles remain at the core of our business.
Derek’s interest in electronics and engineering was instilled in him by his father, Jim, who spent many years in the RAF as a ‘Wireless Mechanic’. He subsequently went on to work for the Pye Group and British Telecom. He passed on the great legacy of being able to ‘get things done’ and was the instructor and engineer who started Derek and his 3 brothers on the road to careers in engineering.
This legacy has now continued with Derek’s children, Peter and Claire, who have supported the growth and development of the business for over 20 years.
