UKCA Mark
UKCA marking means identifying and applying all relevant UK regulations to your product before placing it on the GB market (England, Scotland and Wales). The UKCA marking process involves both technical and administrative steps. UKCA marking is a legal requirement for most electronic products placed on the GB market and, at a minimum, is likely to require consideration of the EMC Regulations and Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations.

Technical Requirements
Each UK regulation references a list of designated standards. Testing in full to the appropriate designated standard provides ‘presumption of conformity’ with the essential requirements of the relevant regulation.
Administrative Requirements
There are several key elements of UKCA marking when it comes to the administrative requirements. Manufacturers need to compile and keep Technical Documentation as well as draw up and sign a Declaration of Conformity (DoC). The DoC forms the legal statement that the product meets the essential requirements of the relevant regulations. Manufacturers must also be careful to apply the correct form of labelling to the product.
Ongoing Compliance
UKCA marking must be considered an ongoing process. All subsequent products of the type first tested must remain compliant at the point they are placed on the market.
Manufacturers should periodically be assessing the compliance of a product by checking:
- The directives and standards applicable to the product have not changed
- The product itself has not changed / been modified
UKCA Timeline
The latest guidance from DBT, released on the 1st August 2023, states that “the government intends to extend recognition of the CE marking for placing most goods on the market in Great Britain, indefinitely, beyond December 2024.” The update applies to 18 regulations including both electromagnetic compatibility and radio equipment.
